The Great Winter Coat Hunt

It's that time of year again. The time when you buy the item you're guaranteed to see a lot of this Winter (and possible Autumn, Spring and Summer in the U.K); the perfect coat. Like bikinis, they have to be bought roughly 3 months before you intend to wear them (I have missed out on many a Topshop delight by not following this rule), so the dregs of summer is the perfect time to start the search. I want to break tradition this year, by buying an adventurous colour (by adventurous, I mean grey) and even introducing some sort of pattern or unusual texture. I don't want to spend oodles of my hard earned cash, I don't want to be sick of it in 2 weeks time and I don't want it to date and be unwearable in years to come. Impossible? We'll see. First, here are the designer picks I'm desperate for the High Street to recreate (hint, hint Topshop).

All images from Net a Porter, the Asos of the wealthy, Missoni, Luella, Y3

Everyone loves a bit of Missoni, and I'd love to recreate their nomad inspired Winter collection with this layered coat. It can be worn two ways, getting the maximum value for your 1535 quid, and I like how the knitted layer stops it from being too mature and a bit more interesting. The Luella is pretty much my perfect coat, which is unfourtunately sold out on the site (though it makes no difference to me), and is complete with all the quirky details that she's famous for. Cute buttons, random bows and cropped sleeves keep it from looking frumpy, but the £573 price tag prevents it from becoming the love of my life. I've always wanted a duffle coat to be subverted by items from my wardrobe, and this sleek Y3 style would be a match made in heaven.

I loved the unusual coat/dress hybrids seen at Miu Miu, and how you could have hours of fun playing around with the way they fasten. Chloe presented a much more practical style, with a cute toggled fastening, and Rag and Bone's sleek offering with a hint of Ninja would be very welcome on my coatstand.

Image from Style Bubble, see I'm getting pretty good at this referencing lark

Vintage is also an option, though I don't often have the patience, and always have something specific in mind. Like this vintage Balenciaga coat that Susie Bubble has. I wonder if it has a twin somewhere?

Weekdays might just be my favourite days

Found some pretty much perfect coats by Weekday, only problem is, they're in Sweden! Hopefully Selina will start a Swedish shopping service soon (no pressure), but if not there's a few other bloggers who are willing to help.

I haven't seen many coats I like on the high street yet, probably due to being extremely fussy and indecisive, but a few have caught my eye. Miss Selfridge does a nice grey duffle coat, though I'm concerned about the length and whether it's a bit too 'Back to School.' I found the checked Topshop number on the lookbook site, so who knows if it'll ever make it into store. Still, I like the unusual shape and I don't think the pattern is too distracting. I'd always associated Ben Sherman with slightly chavvy youths with too much aftershave, but I think this coat changes that, especially at the price of £160. It's quite sophisticated and maybe oh-so slightly channeling Luella with the contrast colour. I hope the Jill Sander collection for Uniqlo comes to a store like me, I really like this borrowed from your (non-existent) boyfriend style, and even though the colour isn't particularly inspiring, it would be nice to own something by such a revered designer.

So basically to sum up this slightly rambling post, I like a lot of coats, but can only afford one., which wil probably be from the High Street or Sweden. I'll let you know how the hunt goes; I may call the follow-up post something like 'Get your coat, you've pulled!' to keep the pun influenced titles going.

By the way, thanks for the great response to the Dress Project. Hopefully your expectations (and my need of a new dress) will stop me from procrastinating, and not completing yet another intended DIY. I have a really exciting post planned about an event I went to yesterday (still overwhelmed about the blogging world coming to life), so keep a look out!

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
