Me, Me, Me?

13 February 2011

It comes with the fashion blogger territory that we take obscene amounts of photos of ourselves.  My iPhoto is ridiculously narcissistic with a severe lack of family photos and I often have to shield it from passers by. When reading this article I realised what a strange breed we are, photographing, analysing our outfit combinations and sharing them with the world.  I guess the reason why all of my outfit photos tend to be in one handy post, is to ensure the authentic mix of topics on this blog and to make sure it's not just me, me, me each time you refresh.  This is why you're unlikely to see ten pictures of me in the same outfit; I just can't bring myself to do it!  I think the truth is I'm a little scared to let one outfit speak for itself and prefer to show you what I'm wearing within the context of a few days.  It might be different if I were taking my photos in interesting locations on a fancy DSLR (my fund has £80, though I might end up spending it on bills) but for the time being, you'll get Outfits of The Week and the white wall of my living room.  Here's what I've been wearing whilst trying to figure out what is going on with my final collection; it's still a bit vague.

vintage 50s dress

vintage 50s dress

Saturday (night)
Dress, belt - Angels Sale
Tights - Ancient M&S?
Socks, ring - Primark
Shoes - Steve Madden
Necklaces - Brooklyn Charm & Brooklyn Flea

Isn't a bit of fancy dress fun?  I was invited to a 40s/50s style birthday party and what with having a few vintage dresses languishing from the Angels Sale, I decided to go with the latter decade.  I'd always meant to shorten this dress but never quite got around to it, so this length was perfect for such an occasion.  I might temporarily take it up though, as I'd prefer it slightly more mini for the (hopefully) warm summer months.  I also attempted something vaguely different with my hair, a beehive using Carrie's tutorial, even though the 60s hairstyle style pulls this outfit into Mad Men territory.  I don't have a massive head of hair, so the backcombing was somewhat redundant but I'm pleased to add a new style to my repertoire.  This video is also a good un.

asymmetric skirt horace tee

house of holland new york citights

Monday
Cardigan - c/o Next
T-shirt - Horace
Skirt, bracelet - Topshop
Shorts - H&M
Brogues - Office
Jewellery - Forever 21

I've been getting into my motif t-shirts recently as I love juxtaposing them with a smarter skirt.  Elisabeth is also a fan of the tee and skirt combination and inspired me to seek out a random design on Asos, back when there was no vague shopping ban in place.  I'm buying a lot of my t-shirts looser these days as I'm no longer a fan of the skin-tight tees from way back when, so hopefully my future self will thank me.  I wore shorts underneath this skirt as it's a wee bit short on one side and the gale force winds earlier this week were lethal!  As you can see I caved and bought the New York House of Holland tights but already the toes are ruined with gaping holes!  Luckily my Parisian pair is still intact so I guess it's just the luck of the draw, but I'm still rather gutted.  Expect to see them worn with ankle socks in the future.

breton tee midi skirt

asos fur tippet leather jacket breton top

Thursday
Jacket, necklace - Topshop
Fake fur tippet - Asos
Breton top - Laura Ashley via Charity Shop
Skirt - c/o Next
Tights - Topshop
Brogues - Office

I finally managed to find the pleated skirt I wore for the Next challenge in store, proving that the mock shop never lies.  I do hate when items are advertised as being in store and fail to materialise, so it was nice to see the familiar items from the bloggers day even if there was a lack of the 20-something fashionistas running around in floppy hats.  I am pretty much wearing a variation of the outfit  I styled with my own striped tee (working the Anti-fit look), but I will probably show off the waist the next time I wear it.  I ordered the fake (or fantasy) fur tippet after seeing a similar version styled here, and I quite like how it transforms my biker jacket.

tapered trousers jaeger shirt

brogues and tartan tights

Friday
Shirt - Jaeger via Battersea Boot Fair
Trousers - Topshop
Belt - Angels Sale
Tights - Calzedonia
Brogues - Office
Necklace - Marc by Marc Jacobs

I've realised that my trousers have been feeling a lot of neglect recently.  It all started off so well, when I found the Acne pair back in New York and this Topshop pair over the Summer, but most of the time I end up wearing some kinds of skirt/shorts/dress variation.  I'm trying to wear the forgotten wardrobe items a little more, so expect more trews popping up on here as I like to mix things up a bit.  I bought this vintage Jaeger shirt for £1 at the Battersea Boot Fair and it smelled pretty funky, but I saw the potential regardless.  I love the button detailing on the pocket and the metal pockets and what a bargain?!  The combined result is a bit of a boys school uniform, but future outfits will probably include the aforementioned motif tees.  I might have bought this one too...

So I'd be interested to know how you feel about your outfit posts if you're a regular; do you look at yourself posing in front of your tripod and just think 'What am I doing?'  Do you have to squint when scrolling down the page as you can't bear seeing ten photos of yourself?  Although I like to have a record of what I've been wearing, I can't help feeling a bit freaked out when I see myself on Google images....

  7. I LOVE the 1st and last outfits - And kind of how they juxtapose each other, one being so girly and feminine, and the other so school boy, androgynous! You rock both looks perfectly!

I definatley feel a little weird and vain prancing around in front of a camera for outfit posts, and it is kind of scary scrolling down and having this huge page of me, me, me! But I hope people viewing and reading appreciate the pictures in a way only bloggers can I think, its not about being vain, its about having fun with fashion, and being part of a community which inspires people!

  8. 1. your floral dress is amazing

    2. I do sometimes wonder what I'm doing, haha, but on the other hand I cannot beging to explain how useful taking the photos has proved to my health...sounds silly, but it gives me real perspective on how I am doing!

  9. I have so much respect for style bloggers because style is such a personal thing...it's horrible to see people getting abuse from a cowardly 'annonymous' - that being said it's something i really want to get into. It's great to see outfit posts and different people's inspiration and style!

I just don't know where to start! And like you said, would feel a bit silly posing in front of a tripod...orrrr my make shift tripod made of a stack of books!!! Any advice? X

  10. Great outfits, I love the asymmetric skirt the most!! I try to mix it up a little by doing posts on London and all its happenings but there are a lot of OOTD posts out there. I personally don't mind as long as it's always different outfits being shown. I would never photograph an outfit I've already worn on the blog before, not because I don't repeat outfit in real life but because it must be boring for the readers. I do like these weekly posts because it's easy to see how a persons style changes from day to day.

  12. Love the asymmetric Topshop skirt! Love your weekly round up of outfits post - as makes for a more in depth and fun to read post...

  13. i know exactly what you mean about the iPhoto shame! bloggers shouldnt use outfit posts as a crutch, but they can add something special + personal xx

  14. Haha I agree with the iPhoto business too! Once I'm done with them I bundle them all into a folder and either delete or wait to transfer them to my hard drive. Though I've no idea why I'm saving them. Just in case my blog ever decides to go kaput I suppose? Anyways, I'm not so keen on blogs that post 10 pics of the same outfit, it's a bit boring and as narcisstic as blogs are, there really isn't need is there? LOVE that Angels dress, I didn't think the length was too long to be honest, it's rather lovely but I agree that you'd probably get more wear out of it if it was shortened!

  15. my blog always seems a bit mixed up so i like to put my face in there every so often just so it doesn't get too dull but i'm not so photogenic so it's less more than more. to be honest i don't really read of blogs with like 15 pics of the same outfit in different angles and light, pretty boring stuff and usually american aren't they?

the jaeger shirt is ace, i really like the button detail too, is it a mens shirt? looking cool in all but i think the last is my fav

  16. You look really lovely in the vintage dress photos! I also think a beehive suits you. Glad to see the horse necklace we both have has made another appearance! I'm guilty of the separate posts for each outfit I'm afraid =/ I never thought about it being a bit 'me, me, me', I just like to have one picture for the outfit, shoes, and a close up of detail. I really like your weekly ones though, doing them separately means I never get a whole weeks worth and its cool seeing someone's weekly wardrobe all in one go :)

  17. Love this post, I swear if anyone took my laptop they would be like that girl is soooo vain she has about 20000 billion photos of herself haha. It's the only way to share, and also we all like to see each others style I choose blogs style over magazines any day. Loving these outfits !!! Did you have fun at the party, that beehive is divine !! and I am loving the chunky platforms :)
Yeah I love a good tee, I fall out of love with them for a while because I thought I looked scruffy but my mates are like where's that tee I love on you haha. So I must look okay, I adore all these outfits you have one of the coolest styles and I love that you always wear a mix of things, I'm never bored with any outfit on you.
Happy Val day and all that crap haha

  18. I never take pictures of myself, at least not yet. I don't feel like I have anything to contribute on this front :P haha, and I don't have a tripod nor white wall to do it against so sadly I am not equipped yet. But i was thinking of maybe perhaps in the future doing it, but just not yet :) I also think that often I would feel pressure to be super pretty/or to have new things to show all the time, which I know isn't true but I think it's an aspect that is still making me be vary about it..

My mum thinks my blog is vain, but I tell her its just self-indulgent... I like looking at outfit posts, so I do try and put a couple up now and again, but yes I do feel silly if people see all the pictures on my computer!

  25. I am completely and utterly in love with that blue assymetric skirt! It looks fab on you.

I quite like the outfit round ups that you do, rather than individual posts for each, but I wouldn't worry about doing that either - we're all fashion bloggers here!

  26. kinda in love with that side a-line cut skirt. and aahhh i just read on the parkncube blog a quote that i think fits with your intro...

"I have this this & that but I want more reminded me of this whole blogger popularity issue – you just can never have enough.." gaaah I get sick of looking at myself and often feel like I need to just quit blogging...

  29. I have been telling myself for the longest time that I will start doing style posts, but I'e never actually gotten round to doing so. First of all, finding a blank wall in my house is impossible without having to shift heavy objects, and I always feel like a... erm pleb taking pictures outside.

But I've promised myself that I'd take at least one picture a week... regardless of how crazy people think I am.

  34. You have a glorious collection of shoes mrs! I love those heels in the first snap. Hmmm I know what you mean about outfit posting, it's the most bizarre occupation, I doubt people who didn't blog would quite 'get it' You still manage to get great shots though even with a standard point n' shoot and no DSLR! jazzy ♥

  36. You always look so cool in all your outfits, I am so jealous! I do quite enjoy taking pictures of my outfits as it helps me to be more objective and also to record outfits I particularly liked to (vain as that sounds) I do take a LOT of photos but I like to show the detail of things...I guess it's all down to personal taste :)

  37. Yup, agreed. I almost never end up doing outfit posts because I can't imagine that anyone is very interested. Which is weird considering how much I like seeing other peoples. Love the Horace t-shirt, what are the pictures? x

  38. I like your outfit posts too - the mixture and contrast is just lovely. I am in love with that dress - stunning! But you look ace in the other outfits too, love that Topshop skirt and how you've accessorised it!

  40. Eee I love all this weeks outfits! I feel pretty silly posing in front of my camera. And a little bit shamefully my blog is totally secret, only my boyf knows about it and is totally sworn to secrecy. Although my housemate has started to notice how often I move the sofas about when she's out - it's to get a decent stretch of wall. I'm guessing your friends/family know about this?
