High Street Mission: The Trenchcoat

5 August 2011

trench coats

It's rather un-fashion blogger for me to say this, but I'm struggling to dress in this heat.  Ever since I've moved back to my childhood room, I've been living in a bit of a chaotic state with clothes and shoes everywhere and it's hard to even locate pieces, let alone work out what goes with what.  I miss the walk in wardrobe of my student house!  A further clearout is definitely needed as it will become even more impossible to store new additions, so I'm back to focusing on the one staple item I want to own whilst getting rid of anything unnecessary. Is it crazy to say that I do not possess a trench coat?  My Mum has a couple of vintage Burberry numbers that I'm rather envious of, but I want one to call my own.  I'm a major fan of transitional dressing and this style of outerwear occupies the space between a winter coat and lightweight jacket and looks equally as great with bare legs and boots or layered heavily.  I've gathered a few inspirational images and unlike the antique lace dress I've yet to find, I've placed an order for this Asos maxi length style in the sale.  I'm not sure if it'll be a bit too long for my 5'6-ish frame but am hoping for the best until I can stumble upon another vintage Burberry number.  What are your thoughts on trench coats?  I might look completely ridiculous in the one I've ordered and nothing like Cara Delevingne but I'm hoping for the best!

  1. The burberry trench is a classic - i got a petite one off ebay (a small size, too, and probably the most expensive piece i've ever bought at £130 but worth it, as it'll be with me always) which is just under knee length on my 5'3" frame. You can get much cheaper ones on ebay, depending on the size you want, and they'll probably last a lot longer than just-as-expensive high street ones!

  2. love the trench.. it fits with a lot of things and makes it that much more awesome. Dressing in the heat is all about simple.. yet play with awesome colours and fabrics to make it more interesting.

  3. Trenches suit everyone. I own two, one red, one classic camel. I love them both. They're so flattering to the female shape.

  5. Hope it works out! I had one I wore to death, in the end I accidentally set it on fire :( I found an aquascutum one in a charity shop, but it's that mid-calf length and I've never felt smart enough to wear it! Maybe this is the year... Your post has inspired me to try again either way :D

  10. I love trench coats, almost as much as I love biker jackets, and the only reason why they come secondary to biker jackets is because I can't find one at a suitable length or fit for me. I'm 5'3" so it's very easy for a trench coat to make me look frumpy unless I wear heels.

  11. I love trench coats. I cannot WAIT for it to cool down so I can wear mine again! I seriously struggle dressing for warm weather and just love autumn. I'll be wearing mine (which is from Next) constantly!

  12. Definitely, trench coat is a Must-have in everybody's wardrobe! Personally I prefer well tailored ones with waist belt rather than the loose ones.

  15. I've been craving a trench recently too. Not sure if they are very 'me' though. I'm not normally a classics kind of gal! I think I'd go for a navy/black/leather/interesting version one though. x

  17. I love trench coats! I think that they always look so polished.. I found a great Trench at Banana Republic a couple of years ago...would totally love an iconic Burberry one, of course, but this one was a good alternative on my student budget :)

  18. I think it's impossible to look bad in a trench coat! :D Haha, I feel it's so hard for me to get dressed in the COLD but in the heat I'm fine. I just need one or two pieces (skirt/top, dress, or trouser/top) and I'm DONE, whereas with cold I need to layer, find tights/outerwear etc.

    Anyway! Congrats on graduating also!
