A Snowy Escape

things to see in Germany

I really should make more of my weekends.  It's possible for me to get the dreaded Sunday Night Feeling on a Saturday morning and feel that I've already wasted the limited hours of freedom by the time I've risen from my bed.  Long weekends are perfect for European city breaks and last Friday I decided to pop to Germany to see my Aunt for a few days.  The snow was still in full force when I arrived and the only positive about the chillier temperatures, was that everything stayed perfectly set and fairytale like.  I instantly felt relaxed within the vastly different landscape containing snow-capped forests and fields in comparison to the rows of terraced houses where I live.  Complete with a toasty house, constant stream of pancakes and a handy way of watching UK television, it was the perfect way to spend a cosy weekend and feel like the daily grind was a million miles away.

For once I managed to travel light and only pack a few things that I knew I would actually wear, jumpers, thermals and a pair of sensible yet smart shoesThis was a handy little guide that taught me to reign things in a little bit.  I was also finally forced to wear a hat!  I'm not a natural hat person (unlike Olivia), I've dabbled a little in the past but am generally willing to sacrifice a warm head for an immaculate hairstyle.  For some reason I felt like a bit of a Girl Scout in my ensemble but wanted to jump on the snowy outfit post bandwagon and tick that off my list.

I've lost count as to how many times I've been to this part of Germany and even though we tend to do the same things (wander around Wiesbaden, eat ridiculous amounts of food at the Sports Bar), the familiarity is all part of the excitement.  I even used a bit of my broken A Level German when a lady asked where my scarf was from (complete with hand knitting actions) and introduced my family members to the joys of COS in Frankfurt.  I didn't buy much at all as the shops are pretty much of the H&M, Zara, Mango ilk, but I did somehow stumble across this handy metal hair clip in bronze for a mere Euro.  I'm trying to increase my hair accessory collection and range of styles this year, so this was the perfect addition to enhance the simple ponytail.

Are you planning any city breaks this year?  I definitely need to do it more often especially since it's so easy to be in a completely different setting within a few hours.  Fingers crossed!

  1. I love Germany, I've only been twice - Berlin and Constanz - but I loved it both times and I'm desperate to go back. It's such an interesting country with so many things to see! I've got a few little breaks planned, I'm going up to Aberdeen next month then hopefully Paris or possibly Berlin again in August!xo

  11. Oh wow, those winter landscape are awesome. It looks dreamy judging by your beautiful pictures. In fact, it feels so weird to me to ear « I decided to pop in Germany ». I live in Quebec (In Canada) and if I want to travel in another country, it is pretty complicated, even for the US... I think that this is what Europe have magical : this freedom of travelling!
